AI Search Visibility Audits Reveal Where Brands Go Unnamed

Roughly one in five Google searches now returns an AI summary, and users who see one rarely click a traditional link. Your rankings report can look healthy while buyers form opinions about you inside an answer you never see. An AI search visibility audit closes that gap. It shows whether generative engines mention, cite, and describe your brand correctly.

The click is disappearing, but the buyer is not

Start with the behavior shift. As Fortune’s coverage of the Pew study reports, just 8% of users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result link. Users who saw no summary clicked nearly twice as often. Just over a quarter of searches that produced a summary ended with no click at all, against 16% of pages with only traditional results.

Ahrefs measured the damage from the publisher side. A report on the Ahrefs study says AI Overviews cut click-through rates for top-ranking results by around 58%.

So traffic is thinner. Is the remaining audience worth chasing? Adobe’s data suggests yes. Per Digital Commerce 360’s summary of Adobe’s findings, AI-referred traffic to retail sites grew 138% year over year in May 2026, and it converted at a rate 54% better than non-AI traffic.

Fewer clicks, better clicks. The brands named inside the answer get the shrinking, higher-intent traffic. Everyone else gets neither.

What an AI search visibility audit actually measures

It is not a rank check. Generative engines do not return ten blue links in a fixed order. They compose an answer, and your brand either appears in it or does not. A useful audit separates four things that vendors often blur together:

    • Mention rate: how often your brand name appears in answers for a defined prompt set.
    • Citation rate: how often your own pages, or pages about you, are linked as sources.
    • Position and framing: whether you are the first recommendation or a footnote, and whether the description is accurate and favorable.
    • Share of voice: your mention rate against named competitors on the same prompts.

Mentions without citations matter. So do citations without mentions. A model may lean on your research and credit someone else, or recommend you while linking a reseller. Each case points to a different fix.

How to run the audit, step by step

You do not need a six-figure platform to start. You need discipline.

    1. Build the prompt set. Pull 40 to 100 real questions from sales calls, support tickets, and CRM notes. Our piece on CRM notes and keywords shows why those beat generic keyword tools. Split them into category, comparison, problem, and brand-specific prompts.
    2. Note the pattern in prompt length. According to Fortune’s report on the Pew data, just 8% of one or two-word searches produced an AI summary. For searches of ten words or more, the same report puts the figure at 53%. Conversational, long-form prompts are where generative answers concentrate, so weight your set toward them.
    3. Test across engines. Run every prompt in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. Answers differ by engine, and your buyers do not all use one.
    4. Repeat each prompt. Outputs vary run to run. Run each prompt several times, ideally across days, and report a rate instead of a yes or no.
    5. Log everything. Record the answer text, cited URLs, competitors named, sentiment, and factual errors. Screenshots are cheap evidence for the next budget meeting.
    6. Score and prioritize. Rank gaps by commercial value. Missing from a high-intent comparison prompt costs more than missing from a trivia query.

If you want to turn the logs into a repeatable number, see how AI visibility scoring converts scattered mentions into a KPI your CFO will recognize.

    Where creators fit in

This is the part most audits skip. Generative engines pull from forums, review sites, and video platforms, not just brand pages. Creator content is often in that mix. That cuts both ways.

On the upside, a well-briefed creator video can become the source that makes an engine recommend you. We covered how to prove that with holdout tests instead of assuming it. On the downside, an off-message or outdated video can be cited with no review from you. That risk is spelled out in our analysis of AI shopping agents citing creator videos.

So add a creator layer to the audit. For every answer that cites a video or social post, ask three questions. Is the creator under contract with you? Are the claims accurate and current? Is the disclosure clear? Any “no” goes on the remediation list.

Vet your tools before you trust their scores

The tool market is crowded and young. Many dashboards report a single proprietary “GEO score” with no explanation of the prompts, sampling, or engines behind it. Be skeptical.

Ask vendors how many times each prompt is run, how personalization and location are handled, and whether you can export raw answers. Our vendor claims checklist walks through the full question list, and this review of audit platforms explains why a score alone proves nothing.

If a vendor cannot show you the raw answers behind a visibility score, you are buying a number, not a measurement.

    Turning findings into action

An audit that ends in a slide deck is waste. Sort findings into three buckets.

Factual errors. Wrong pricing, outdated features, or a confused product description. Fix the source pages, update your structured data, and correct third-party listings. These are the cheapest wins.

Coverage gaps. Prompts where competitors appear and you do not. Look at what the engines cite for those answers. Usually it is a comparison article, a review thread, or a video. Your options are to create better content, earn placement, or brief creators to cover the topic properly.

Authority gaps. You appear, but never as the recommended pick. This takes longer. Original data, expert authorship, and consistent third-party coverage move it. There is no hack.

Measuring the result without fooling yourself

Re-run the same prompt set monthly. Keep the set stable so trends mean something, and add new prompts in a separate tab.

Then connect visibility to outcomes. AI referrals are hard to isolate, and much of the traffic lands in direct. Our note on dark AI traffic covers workarounds, from referrer filters to post-purchase surveys asking where buyers first heard of you. Treat all of it as directional. Correlation is not proof, and a visibility lift during a product launch may be the launch.

    Common questions, answered up front

Do we need this if our SEO is strong? Yes. Strong rankings and strong generative visibility overlap, but they are not the same thing. Your audit may show a top-three page that no engine ever cites.

Who owns it? Ideally SEO or content leads, with PR and influencer teams feeding in, since both shape the third-party sources engines read.

Your next step is small. This week, pull 50 real customer questions, run them through four engines, and log who gets named. That one spreadsheet will tell you more than any vendor demo.

    FAQs

What is an AI search visibility audit?

It is a structured review of how often and how accurately generative engines such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini mention and cite your brand. It covers mention rate, citation rate, framing, and share of voice against competitors for a defined set of prompts.

How is it different from a traditional SEO audit?

A traditional audit checks technical health, rankings, and backlinks. A visibility audit checks what appears inside generated answers, where there is no fixed ranking and results vary by run. The two share inputs, such as content quality and authority, but they measure different outcomes.

How many prompts should we test?

Start with 40 to 100 prompts drawn from real customer language, covering category, comparison, problem, and brand queries. Run each one multiple times and across several engines so you can report rates instead of single results.

How often should we repeat the audit?

Monthly is a practical cadence for most brands. Keep the core prompt set fixed for trend accuracy, and run an extra check after major launches, site changes, or large creator campaigns.

Can creator content improve our presence in AI answers?

It can, because engines draw on video, social, and review content as sources. Test the effect with holdouts instead of assuming it, and make sure creator claims are accurate, current, and properly disclosed, since you cannot control how those posts get cited.

How do we track traffic that comes from AI answers?

Filter analytics for referrers such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and gemini.google.com, and add a “how did you hear about us” question at purchase. Expect gaps, because some AI visits show up as direct traffic. Use the numbers as directional evidence.

Should we buy a visibility tracking platform?

Only after a manual pilot. Run your own prompt set first so you know what good data looks like, then demand raw answer exports, transparent sampling, and engine coverage from any vendor before you sign.
