Meta New Ad Formats: A Brand Reach and Attention Scorecard

Meta’s Ads Super Burst test flights reached a median of 34 million people each, according to the company. Meta’s four new ad formats target the same budget television has held for decades. Here is how a brand should evaluate each one on reach, placement and measurement, and what to hold back until the evidence arrives.

    What Meta actually announced

At its Brand Building Summit, Meta introduced four products for brand advertisers: Ads Super Burst, First Impression Ads, expanded Reels Trending Ads and Aggregated View Time. They are not equally mature. Super Burst is launching, First Impression Ads is in a test, Reels Trending Ads keeps expanding, and Aggregated View Time is in alpha.

That maturity gap should drive your planning. Only one of these is something you can build a Q4 plan around today.

    • Ads Super Burst: reserve a 3 to 24 hour window, with optional category exclusivity.
    • First Impression Ads: the first ad position in Facebook Feed, one brand per day, US test.
    • Reels Trending Ads: placement right after the most-watched Reels, now with more topics.
    • Aggregated View Time: a measurement idea that sums attention seconds across a week.

Ads Super Burst: renting the moment

This is the substantive one. Per B&T’s report, advertisers reserve inventory through Meta’s Reach Planner, with estimated reach and pricing and guaranteed delivery tied to those estimates. Category exclusivity is available, which stops competitors in your category from booking the same window.

Think product drops, awards nights, a sports opener. Moments where you used to buy television because nothing else guaranteed the audience would be there at the same time.

So what do the early numbers say? Meta reports a median 2.9 point lift in ad recall and a 0.6 point lift in intent across test flights. Read that carefully. Reach is the headline. Intent barely moved.

A 0.6 point intent lift is a percentage-point change, not a percent change. Ask for baselines, flight counts and study design before you let a reach number justify a premium price.

PPC Land notes that the research behind these lift claims is unpublished, and that the post does not say how Meta defines a category, what exclusivity costs, or whether exclusivity also keeps rivals’ auction ads away from the same people. Those gaps decide whether the product is worth buying. Rollout is phased, with no country list or minimum spend published.

Where it fits against TikTok and YouTube

Selling a reserved, high-reach slot is not new. TikTok has TopView and a pulse-style trend product, which we broke down in our TopView and Pulse spend guide. What differs here is that Meta sells a time window, not one placement, and adds exclusivity. That is a television sponsorship idea moved into social.

First Impression Ads: premium, tiny, unproven

One advertiser a day gets the first ad position when someone opens Facebook Feed. Meta calls it an early test in the US, driven by years of advertiser requests.

Should you chase it? Probably not yet. No pricing, selection method or Instagram scope has been shared. Sources even differ on whether the slot lives only on Facebook. Treat it as a demand-gauging pilot for Meta, and register interest through your rep if you have a launch that justifies a single-brand-per-day moment.

Reels Trending Ads: the one you can use now

This format places your ad immediately after the most-watched and most culturally relevant Reels on Facebook and Instagram. It is the most established of the four. The update adds 15 always-on standard topics, including new categories for Home & Garden and Spanish-language content, plus seasonal lineups around the holidays and the start of football and basketball seasons.

Targeting control is the part brand safety teams care about. Meta says custom audience exclusions are coming later this year, so you can keep existing customers or specific groups out of the buy.

Meta also claims action intent rose more than five percentage points against control groups with no campaign exposure, plus an incremental five point lift in unaided awareness. Note the comparison. The action intent control saw none of the campaign, so that number measures the whole campaign, not the contribution of the trending placement. PPC Land flags exactly this distinction.

    Pairing it with creator content

Trending placements reward content that feels native to Reels. If you run creator-led work, test creator assets here against your standard brand cut. Our guide on collab posts versus partnership ads helps you decide which paid route to put behind those assets, and the partnership ads vetting guide covers screening the creators themselves.

    Aggregated View Time: promising, alpha-stage

The measurement argument is smart. Short-form viewers rarely watch one long stretch. They see a brand for two seconds, then one the next day, then two more later. Per PPC Land’s coverage, Meta says its research found that five seconds of attention added up over a week drove 32% more offline sales than one continuous five-second view.

Aggregated View Time would count total time with your brand across a week, not each impression alone, and might eventually steer delivery. It is in alpha, and the studies behind that sales claim are not named in the coverage I reviewed. PPC Land also reports that a Meta planning director cited a lower figure of 21% just days earlier, so the number has already moved.

Useful idea. Not yet a KPI.

A brand scorecard before you spend

    1. Reach: Super Burst is the only format with a scale claim you can plan against, and it comes from the vendor’s own tests.
    2. Placement: Reels Trending Ads is live and broad. First Impression Ads is a single-slot test.
    3. Measurement: demand independent brand lift, not just Meta’s platform-reported recall.
    4. Attribution: awareness bursts need a path to conversion. Check your attribution setup so a spike in attention does not vanish into direct traffic.

For a practical test, run one Super Burst window around a real launch with a holdout region, and ask for exclusivity pricing in writing. Compare cost per incremental recall point against what you currently pay for TV or TopView-style buys.

    Limits to keep in view

Every performance figure here comes from Meta. The footnoted studies were not available in the coverage I reviewed, so I could not verify sample sizes or methods. I also could not confirm pricing, minimums or markets for any of the four formats. Treat this as an evaluation framework, and update it as Meta publishes more.

Next step: ask your Meta rep for Super Burst pricing, category definitions and brand lift study access, then pencil one window into your next major launch as a controlled test.

    FAQs

    What is Ads Super Burst?

It is a reservation format that lets a brand book a 3 to 24 hour window on Facebook and Instagram. Delivery is guaranteed against estimates from Reach Planner, and category exclusivity is optional.

How much reach did Ads Super Burst deliver in tests?

Because it is a median, half of the flights reached fewer people.

Is First Impression Ads available to all brands?

No. It is an early US test that gives one brand per day the first ad position when someone opens Facebook Feed. Pricing and selection details have not been published.

What is new in Reels Trending Ads?

There are now 15 always-on topics, including Home & Garden and Spanish-language content, along with seasonal lineups. Custom audience exclusions are expected later this year.

    What is Aggregated View Time?

It is an alpha-stage measurement approach that totals a person’s seconds with your brand across a week instead of judging each view separately. Meta may later use it to optimize delivery.

Should brands trust Meta’s lift numbers?

Treat them as directional. They are vendor-supplied, and the underlying research has not been published. Run your own brand lift study with a control group before scaling spend.
