Most brands don’t lose money on YouTube and TikTok because of bad creative. They lose it because someone changed a bid on day two. Getting YouTube and TikTok smart bidding settings right means knowing what each algorithm needs, what resets it, and where to keep your hands off. Here is the platform-by-platform version.
Why automation rules differ on each platform
Both platforms now push advertisers toward AI-managed campaigns. The control surfaces, though, are different. Google gives you a menu of bid strategies inside Demand Gen. TikTok bundles setup, audience and creative choices into Smart+ and leaves bidding as one of the few levers you still pull.
That difference shapes everything downstream. On YouTube, your main risk is choosing the wrong goal or starving the algorithm of budget. On TikTok, it is handing over so much control that you can’t diagnose why spend drifted.
If you run creator-led content as ads (Spark Ads, partnership whitelisting), automation also touches your rights and usage terms. Our TikTok licensing audit covers that side.
YouTube: Demand Gen bid strategies, decoded
For most performance buyers, YouTube automation now lives in Demand Gen. Google positions it as the successor to Video Action Campaigns. In its own announcement, Google cites a Nielsen analysis claiming Demand Gen delivers 58% higher ROAS than Video Action Campaigns on average. Treat that as a vendor-reported figure, not a guarantee. Test it against your own baseline.
Google’s Demand Gen performance guide sorts bid strategies into three groups:
- Efficiency: Target CPA, Target ROAS, and Target CPC. Google’s advice is to use a target strategy if you have a desired return on investment.
- Volume: Maximize Conversions and Maximize Conversion Value, which spend your budget to get the most of either.
- Clicks: Maximize Clicks, which Google says should not be used for conversion efficiency.
A practical selection rule
Launching a new product with no conversion history? Start with a volume strategy and let the system find buyers. Have stable CPA or ROAS goals from other channels? Move to a target strategy once the campaign has data. Skipping that sequence is the classic mistake. A tight target on a cold campaign just throttles delivery.
Which brings us to the numbers that matter.
The budget and learning rules you can’t negotiate
Google’s guidance is blunt about what makes new campaigns underperform. Per the performance guide, your budget should be at least 10 times your target CPA. Google’s own example shows how a small budget caps results: a $100 budget with a $10 bid limits you to 10 conversions per day. Google also says the campaign needs at least 50 conversions to build a foundational understanding of what works.
The most expensive habit in smart bidding is editing a campaign that is still learning. Google says changing settings forces some or all of the learning to restart, and large changes can amount to a total reset.
Google’s best-practices article adds budget floors and structure advice. For Maximize strategies, it recommends a daily budget of $100 or more. For target strategies, it says to set a daily budget of at least 10x your target CPA. It also advises merging ad groups that generate fewer than 30 conversions in 30 days, and running across all channels instead of restricting placements.
Here is my working checklist for YouTube:
- Confirm conversion tracking before anything else. Google calls it foundational for Smart Bidding.
- Pick one goal per campaign. Changing the conversion goal on a live campaign is the biggest reset, so start a new campaign instead.
- Flex bids slowly, and follow Google’s guidance of 5-10% per week, with no more than 15%.
- Judge results after 50 conversions, not after 50 clicks.
- Expect noise. Campaigns with few daily conversions have natural volatility, so read trends over longer windows.
TikTok: what Smart+ automates and what it leaves to you
TikTok’s Smart+ Web Campaigns documentation describes AI assistance across setup and optimization for website conversion goals. Its key features cover simplified setup, optimization and bidding, audience, and creative. The bidding line says you select the optimization goal and bidding strategy that suit your business. So the algorithm doesn’t pick your economics for you.
Based on the same page, the settings that matter for brands:
- Optimization goals: Value, Conversion, Landing Page View, and Click are available.
- Bidding: All bidding strategies are supported.
- Placements: Manual placement selection isn’t supported in Smart+. To exclude TikTok or Pangle, you must build a non-Smart+ campaign.
- Creative: Spark Ads are supported, but Smart+ Web doesn’t support mixing Spark and non-Spark ads in one campaign.
- Audience: Location, language, audience exclusion, and gender targeting (not available to all advertisers).
That Spark restriction deserves a second look. If your program mixes creator posts and brand-produced videos, you will need separate campaigns. Plan the structure before launch, because merging later means a fresh learning period.
Choosing a TikTok bid approach
TikTok’s strategies generally trade control for delivery. A lowest-cost style approach maximizes volume against your budget. A cost cap style approach holds your average cost near a target but can underspend if the cap is too tight. The logic mirrors Google’s: volume first on a cold campaign, then add a cost constraint once you know your real CPA. Check the exact strategy names in your Ads Manager account, since labels vary by objective and goal.
For high-stakes moments, automation is only part of the answer. Launch bursts often need reserved inventory, which our TopView and Pulse spend guide breaks down. And if you sell in-app, your Shop performance score affects which affiliate and creator paths stay open.
Side by side: where the two platforms diverge
- Learning discipline: Google publishes explicit rules on minimum conversions and on how far to move bids. Apply the same restraint on TikTok, but verify current thresholds in your own account.
- Placement control: Google recommends all channels for full optimization. TikTok Smart+ forces automatic placements.
- Creative handling: TikTok wants a stocked asset pool and AI-generated variations. YouTube Demand Gen rewards varied video assets across formats.
- Signal quality: Google stresses first-party data, such as the Tag Gateway or offline imports with identifiers. TikTok bidding is only as good as your pixel or Events API setup.
Neither algorithm fixes bad measurement. If creators drive traffic through bio links or checkout pages you don’t control, your conversion signal is already compromised. See our attribution prep guide for the groundwork.
When to override the machine
Automation is a tool, not a strategy. Step in when:
- Daily conversions are so low that volatility looks like failure. Consolidate instead of tweaking.
- Spend concentrates on one asset or channel and you have a specific reason to rebalance. Use controlled budget splits, not constant bid edits.
- Conversion lag distorts yesterday’s numbers. Wait.
- A creator or product issue (compliance flag, stock-out) makes the algorithm’s target wrong. Pause rather than lower the bid.
FAQs
What is the best smart bidding strategy for YouTube?
It depends on your goal. Google groups Demand Gen strategies into efficiency (Target CPA, Target ROAS) and volume (Maximize Conversions, Maximize Conversion Value). Use volume strategies to gather data on new campaigns, and target strategies once you have a CPA or ROAS you must hit.
How much budget does a YouTube Demand Gen campaign need?
Google recommends a budget scaled to your target CPA, plus a minimum daily budget for Maximize strategies. Low budgets are the most common reason a new campaign underperforms. Low budgets are the most common reason a new campaign underperforms.
How long should I wait before judging smart bidding results?
Google advises waiting until the campaign has generated at least 50 conversions, and 30-50 conversions after any significant change. Evaluate trends over longer periods, since conversion lag and normal volatility distort daily numbers.
Does TikTok Smart+ support manual bidding strategies?
For Smart+ Web Campaigns, TikTok’s documentation says all bidding strategies are supported. You also choose the optimization goal: Value, Conversion, Landing Page View, or Click. Placements, however, are automatic.
Can I mix Spark Ads and standard ads in one Smart+ campaign?
Not in Smart+ Web Campaigns. TikTok states that mixing Spark and non-Spark ads in one campaign isn’t supported, so split creator-sourced and brand-produced assets into separate campaigns.
How often can I change bids without resetting learning?
Google’s guidance is to flex bids gradually each week, staying within 5-10% and never exceeding 15%, and to make no changes during the initial learning period. Apply a similar cadence on TikTok to protect delivery stability.
Next step: audit your live YouTube and TikTok campaigns this week for three things (budgets too small for your target CPA, goals changed mid-flight, and mixed Spark and non-Spark assets), then fix only those before touching a single bid.
