One in ten checkable claims AI made about brands contradicted those brands’ own websites. That is the headline from a vendor study, and it is exactly the kind of number that sells software. Before you buy an AI visibility error detection tool, you need to know what the number measures and what it leaves out. Pyra’s Prime is a useful test case.
What Pyra’s Prime actually claims
Pyra builds AI agents for sales, marketing, finance and operations. Its Prime AI Visibility Benchmark saves AI answers and source links for chosen buyer questions, so teams can review how a brand is described. According to the published press release, the study found 183 contradictions among 1,821 checkable claims.
The error rates are not evenly spread. The Pyra release puts the error rate at 25.7% for ecommerce platforms and 26.2% for CRM software. One documented answer listed outdated BigCommerce plan names, even though the brand’s own pricing page showed a different set.
Useful? Yes. Proof that your brand is misdescribed? No. The tool describes a sample, and the sample has edges.
Read the methodology before the headline
Start with what was tested. The benchmark covered 50 questions about 25 brands in five categories across seven model configurations, with three runs per question. Per the published study details, that produced 1,050 answers, all collected on a single day through APIs, with no system prompt.
Then read the disclaimers, which Pyra deserves credit for publishing. The study measures API answers, not consumer app sessions or live Google AI Overviews. It does not measure sales impact. It does not establish a universal model ranking.
That matters for you. If your buyers research in the ChatGPT app or in Google’s AI Mode, an API sample is a proxy, not a mirror.
A vendor’s own disclaimers are the best part of its study. If the fine print says the data excludes consumer apps and sales impact, do not let the sales deck imply otherwise.
Who graded the answers?
Two AI graders checked factual claims against dated fact sheets. All 82 disagreements between them were resolved against source snapshots. Citation support was assessed by an AI judge.
Machine graders checking machine answers is a reasonable design at this scale. It is also a place where errors hide. Ask any vendor three questions:
- What share of grader decisions were audited by a human?
- Who writes the fact sheet, and how often is it refreshed?
- What counts as “checkable,” and what gets excluded?
That last one is crucial. In the Pyra study, links that could not be verified were excluded from the citation rate. Exclusions can quietly move a headline percentage in either direction.
Citation support is not citation presence
Many dashboards celebrate that a brand was cited. Prime’s study asks a harder question: did the cited page load, and did it support the statement attached to it? Among four search-enabled configurations, that rate ran from 37.1% for Perplexity Sonar (accessed through OpenRouter) to 91.4% for Claude Sonnet 5.5, per the same release.
That is a huge spread. A citation is not an endorsement, and a link is not evidence. If your reporting counts every linked mention as a win, you are inflating your own scorecard. For a deeper look at tying citations to revenue, see our guide to prompt citation tracking.
The variance problem nobody wants to price in
Here is the uncomfortable part. AI answers change between runs, so any single check is a snapshot of a moving target.
Pyra’s own data shows it. In the Pyra results, 284 of 350 question-and-configuration pairs (81.1%) produced the same measured outcome across all three runs. The other 66 changed. Roughly one in five pairs moved even under controlled conditions.
An academic paper on uncertainty in AI visibility measurement pushes this further. The author argues that single-run citation metrics are misleadingly precise. In one worked example from the uncertainty paper, a domain with a citation share of approximately 9.5% appeared to beat another at approximately 6.0%. The paper’s 95% bootstrap confidence intervals told a different story: approximately 5.5% to 12.5% for the first domain against approximately 4.0% to 8.0% for the second. The ranges overlap, so the apparent lead could be noise.
The same paper reports median Jaccard overlap between repeated runs of 0.29 to 0.31 for Gemini. Low overlap means the same query frequently cites different sources. A tool that shows you one number without a range is hiding that.
A vetting checklist for any error detection tool
Use this before a demo ends and certainly before a contract starts.
- Repeat sampling. Does the tool run each question multiple times and report a range, not a point estimate?
- Surface coverage. Which interfaces are tested? API, consumer app, AI Overviews, AI Mode? Demand a clear answer.
- Ground truth. Is there a dated, versioned fact source for your brand, and can you correct it?
- Grader transparency. Who or what judges claims, and what is the human audit rate?
- Exclusion rules. What happens to claims that cannot be verified?
- Question design. Do the prompts reflect how your buyers actually ask, or generic templates?
- Exit terms. Can you export saved answers and sources if you leave?
The last item deserves attention because these platforms increasingly bundle autonomous features. Our piece on agentic AI vendor vetting covers guardrails and data portability in detail. The same logic applies to any tool that vendors position as “accuracy” software.
From detection to fixing
Finding an error is half the job. Correcting it takes work on the pages and sources AI systems draw from. Google’s own guidance for generative AI features says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet to appear in those features. The basics still apply: crawlable pages, clear structure, current product details.
Some agencies now package this work. Moburst, a global, full-service digital marketing agency that has worked with over 900 clients, among them Samsung, Reddit and Calm, runs AEO & GEO partners services alongside its influencer marketing practice. That pairing is relevant here because creator content and third-party mentions are among the sources AI answers pull from, so correction work rarely stops at your own website.
Whichever route you choose, treat a detected error as a ticket with an owner. Who updates the page? Who checks the answer again, and when?
Where error detection fits in your measurement stack
Error detection tools tell you what AI says about you. They do not tell you whether it changed a purchase. Keep those questions separate.
The same skepticism applies across martech. Match rates, accuracy scores and lift figures all depend on sample design, as we showed when vetting match rate claims. For scoring models, our guide to accuracy claims before you sign offers a parallel checklist.
A fair budget view: pay for monitoring as an early warning system, not as a verdict. Free tiers, like the monthly check Pyra offers for up to five buyer questions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, are a low-risk way to test whether the output is useful to your team.
FAQs
What is an AI visibility error detection tool?
It is software that saves AI-generated answers about your brand, compares factual claims against a reference source such as your website, and flags contradictions. Some also check whether cited links load and support the statement.
Is the one-in-ten error rate from Pyra’s study reliable for my brand?
Treat the figure as directional. It comes from a vendor-run sample of 25 brands, collected on one day through APIs.
Why do AI answers about my brand change between checks?
Generative systems sample their outputs, so identical questions can produce different answers and citations. In Pyra’s study, 66 of 350 question-and-configuration pairs changed across three runs. Repeated checks and ranges give a truer picture than one snapshot.
Does a citation mean the AI answer is correct?
No. According to the Pyra release, among four search-enabled configurations the share of checked citations that resolved to a live page and supported the attached statement ranged from 37.1% to 91.4%. Verify support, not just presence.
What should I ask a vendor before buying?
Ask about repeat sampling, which AI surfaces are covered, how claims are graded, how unverifiable claims are handled, and whether you can export your data. Request uncertainty ranges, not single scores.
Can these tools prove AI answers affect revenue?
Not on their own. Pyra’s study explicitly says it does not measure sales impact. Pair detection with analytics and pipeline attribution to connect corrections to outcomes.
Next step: pick five buyer questions your sales team hears most, run them through any tool three times, and compare the answers against your current pricing page before you discuss budget.
