Among Gen Z shoppers, only 18.8% named Google as their top source for product discovery, according to a Grin report cited by eMarketer. TikTok and Instagram beat it. If you treat TikTok brand discovery as a side channel, your funnel has a hole in it.
Does TikTok really beat search? The honest answer
The headline is catchy. The evidence is more textured.
In the same Grin data, Instagram led at 30.4% and TikTok followed at 23.2%. So TikTok has not taken the top spot in every cut of the data. It has, however, pushed past Google among younger buyers, and that is the audience most brands are paying to reach.
A second data point comes from Search Engine Land’s analysis of Gen Z behavior. It reports that nearly 40% of Gen Z users prefer TikTok or Instagram over Google for searches such as restaurant tips and fashion inspiration. That is a preference, not a market-share verdict.
Be careful with any survey that crowns a winner. Sample frames differ, and “discovery” is defined differently from one study to the next. Use these numbers to justify a test budget, not to rewrite your whole media plan.
The useful reading is not “TikTok replaced Google.” It is “Google no longer owns the first moment of brand awareness for younger buyers.”
Why discovery behaves differently on a feed
Google rewards people who already know what they want. TikTok reaches people who do not.
eMarketer’s analysis makes the point that social lets users learn about products or trends without actively searching, which feeds impulse purchases. That is a different job from capturing demand. It creates it.
TikTok itself frames the platform the same way. In its announcement of the Search Ads Toggle, the company cites a study finding that 58% of TikTok users discover new brands and products on the platform, 1.5x more than users of other platforms. Treat that as a platform-sourced claim, since the announcement is TikTok’s own. It still tells you where the company is steering advertisers.
What does that mean in practice? Three things:
- The creator is the search result. Users type “best cafes in Paris” or “how to style cargo pants” and get a person, not a link list.
- Trust transfers. Search Engine Land notes that about 4 in 10 Gen Z consumers prefer relatable creators over traditional ads.
- Intent is fuzzy. A search for a product category is not a purchase signal yet. It is a shortlist being built.
Paid search is arriving inside the app
Brands do not have to wait for organic luck. TikTok has been building a real search ad product for a while.
The Search Ads Toggle lets advertisers reuse existing In-Feed creative. Per TikTok, 70% of ad groups with the toggle on saw more efficient performance than those without it. Again, that is internal research, so validate it in your own account.
Early case studies were striking. Marketing Dive reported that Clinique UK recorded 74,000 incremental search impressions and a 441% increase in conversion rate in an early test. Small test, a single brand, a beauty category with strong visual demos. Do not extrapolate it to your B2B software line.
The product has since matured. Search Engine Journal traces the keyword-based Search Ads Campaign, which went live in the U.S. on Sept. 24, 2024, with Traffic and Web Conversion objectives. Its piece also covers match types, negative keywords and impression share. If your paid search team already runs Google Ads, much of that vocabulary will feel familiar.
That matters organizationally. When TikTok has keyword bids and impression share, someone has to own them. Our piece on one owner for search argues that fragmenting SEO, paid and generative search across teams is already costing brands. Add TikTok and the problem gets worse.
Rebrief your creators for queries
Most influencer briefs are written for the feed. They ask for a hook, a product shot and a call to action. Almost none ask the creator to answer a question.
That is the gap. If people search TikTok the way they search Google, creators need to say the query out loud, put it in on-screen text and in the caption, and answer it in the first few seconds. We covered the mechanics in rebriefing creators for queries.
A quick brief upgrade checklist:
- List 10 to 20 real queries your buyers would type, drawn from TikTok’s keyword suggestion tool, customer service logs and comment sections.
- Assign one query per video, so each asset has a single job.
- Ask creators to say the phrase aloud and show it on screen.
- Get usage rights to amplify the best performers as ads.
On that last point, Search Engine Land highlights Branded Mission Ads, which let brands source content from TikTok creators and amplify high-performing videos as ads. Pairing creator content with search placement is where organic and paid finally meet.
The funnel needs a new back half
Discovery without a path to purchase is a vanity metric. And the path has gotten harder to engineer.
With link-in-bio changes, brands have to rethink where a curious viewer lands. We broke that down in rebuilding the funnel after bio links. The short version: do not assume the click will happen on TikTok at all. Many viewers will finish the research on Google or in a chatbot, which is why branded search lift and citation tracking belong in your reporting. See also tracking citations for how that blind spot plays out in generative search.
How to measure discovery without fooling yourself
Last-click will undercount TikTok every time. A viewer sees a creator’s video, searches your brand name on Google a day later and buys. Your dashboard credits search.
So what should you track instead? Start here:
- Branded search lift in the weeks after a creator wave.
- Query-level performance by video, so you know which questions drive saves, shares and site visits.
- Affinity metrics rather than raw reach. Our look at brand affinity scorecards gives a starting framework.
Finance will ask for proof. Be ready with a holdout design: run creator search content in two comparable regions, withhold it from one, and compare branded search and conversion trends. It is slow. It is also the only answer that survives a CFO review.
Placement quality matters too. Not every slot earns the same return, as we explored in premium TikTok placements.
Treat TikTok discovery as a measured experiment with a holdout, not a belief system.
What to do with this next quarter
Pick one product line, write 15 query-led creator briefs, turn on the Search Ads Toggle against the same creative, and compare branded search lift against a holdout market after 6 weeks.
FAQs
Has TikTok actually overtaken Google for brand discovery?
Not universally. Among Gen Z in the Grin data, Instagram and TikTok both ranked ahead of Google as the top source for product discovery, but Google remains dominant for high-intent and older audiences. Treat it as a strong signal for younger segments, not a market-wide verdict.
What is TikTok’s Search Ads Toggle?
It is a feature in TikTok Ads Manager that reuses your existing In-Feed Ad creative and serves it alongside organic search results for relevant queries. Ads are labeled as Sponsored. TikTok says that 70% of ad groups with the toggle on see more efficient performance, based on its own research.
How is TikTok search different from Google search for brands?
Results are mostly short videos from creators, so trust and presentation matter more than page authority. Queries are also more exploratory, which means TikTok tends to influence the shortlist rather than close the sale.
How should I brief creators for TikTok search?
Give each creator a specific query to answer. Ask them to say it aloud, show it on screen and include it in the caption. Secure usage rights so top performers can be amplified as paid placements.
How do I measure TikTok’s impact on discovery?
Track branded search lift, brand lift and ad recall studies, and query-level video performance. Where possible, run a geographic holdout so you can separate TikTok’s effect from what last-click attribution credits to Google.
Should B2B brands care about this shift?
Yes, but test before you commit. Younger buyers are entering purchasing roles, and early awareness may start on social. Start small, measure branded search and pipeline influence, and scale only if the lift shows up.
