Experian LUID Ties Households to Devices, Vet Before You Buy

Experian’s identity footprint is large. That is how many Living Unit IDs Experian says it holds, covering roughly 95% of the U.S. population, according to a Next TV report. If you buy CTV, retail media, or creator-led paid amplification, Experian’s LUID is likely already in your supply chain. Do you know what it actually does?

What a LUID is, in plain terms

LUID stands for Living Unit ID. LUID stands for Living Unit ID, an address-based household identifier, so it does not depend on a cookie or a mobile ad ID. It is address-based, so it does not depend on a cookie or a mobile ad ID.

That distinction matters. A hashed email points to one person. A LUID points to the shared context: the living room TV, the laptop, the tablet, the mail the household receives.

Experian says it uses LUIDs to identify individuals pseudonymously, then pairs them with the digital identifiers it gained through the Tapad acquisition. Pseudonymous is not anonymous. Hold that thought, because it drives the compliance section below.

How the matching works in practice

Say you hold a CRM file of buyers with names and postal addresses. Experian maps those records to a LUID. From there, you can reach the devices tied to those households across channels.

In 2024, Experian combined its offline Marketing Attributes with online data using the LUID. AdTechRadar reported that the combined product bridges those two worlds through that ID. For a brand, the pitch is simple: one key for what people buy offline and where you can reach them online.

A household ID does not remove privacy risk. It moves the risk from the cookie to the matching partner, the contract, and the environment where the match happens.

Where LUIDs fit in a clean room

Most brands should not hand raw customer files to every partner. Clean rooms exist to avoid that. The IAB Tech Lab’s guidance on data clean rooms even uses translation from LiveRamp’s RampID to Experian’s LUID as an example of ID mapping.

Translation is the real operational question. If your agency works in RampID and your publisher works in LUID, someone has to bridge them. We covered the other side of that bridge in our piece on LiveRamp creator data safeguards.

The same IAB guidance cites its State of Data report: 64% of companies using privacy-preserving technologies are using clean rooms. You are not early. You may be behind.

    Household match or person match?

Here is the trade-off nobody puts on the slide. Household-level identity is stable, but it is blunt.

    • Strength: durability. Addresses change less often than devices, emails, or cookies.
    • Strength: reach on shared screens, especially CTV.
    • Weakness: a household is not a buyer. A creator’s gaming content may reach a teenager while the purchase decision sits with a parent.
    • Weakness: frequency control gets murky when several people share one ID.

For influencer programs, this matters most in measurement. If you boost creator content to LUID-matched audiences, you may see lift at the household level that you cannot credit to a specific creator audience segment. Pair it with holdout testing before you claim incrementality.

A vendor checklist before you sign

Ask these questions in procurement, not after launch.

    1. What is the match rate on our file, not the vendor’s average? Run a pilot on a sample of your own customers.
    2. Where does matching happen? A clean room, your environment, or the vendor’s?
    3. What is the legal basis and consent chain? Pseudonymous data can still count as personal data under many privacy laws. Get counsel to confirm for your markets.
    4. Can you delete and suppress? Opt-outs must travel through the identity layer.
    5. What is measured against what? Insist on a renewal-style audit of ROI claims, with a control group.

Also check who else touches the data. Agencies, DSPs, and AI tools stacked on top of the identity layer widen your exposure. Our guide to scoped identity for AI agents shows how to limit what each tool can see.

What this means for creator programs

Creator campaigns usually live on platform-native targeting, so LUIDs matter at the edges. They help when you whitelist creator posts as paid ads, retarget on CTV, or tie creator-driven traffic to offline purchases. They help less in organic discovery.

If you buy through automated systems, review AI paid media targeting controls too, since identity inputs feed those models.

Disclosure still applies. Better targeting does not change what a creator must say about a paid relationship.

Next step: request a LUID match test on a sample of your CRM file inside a clean room, with a holdout group, and compare results to your current identity partner before committing budget.

    FAQs

    What does LUID stand for?

Living Unit ID. It is Experian’s persistent, household-level identifier that groups the people and devices at one physical address.

Is a LUID personally identifiable information?

Experian describes its approach as pseudonymous. That is not the same as anonymous, and many privacy laws treat pseudonymous data as personal data. Confirm treatment with legal counsel in each market where you activate.

How is a LUID different from a cookie or hashed email?

Cookies and mobile ad IDs track devices or browsers. Hashed emails point to one person. A LUID is address-based and represents a household, so it tends to be more stable over time.

Can I use LUIDs in a data clean room?

Yes. The IAB Tech Lab guidance references LUID as a match key and discusses translating between identifiers such as RampID and LUID. Confirm which clean rooms your vendors support.

Does a household ID help measure influencer campaigns?

It can connect paid creator content to household-level outcomes, including offline purchases. It cannot tell you which person in the home acted, so use holdouts to prove incremental lift.

What should I ask an identity vendor first?

Ask for a match rate on your own file, where matching occurs, how consent and deletion flow through, and how results are validated against a control group.
