Liferay SEO and AEO Studio, Vetting Answer Engine Fixes

Only 8% of users who saw a Google AI summary clicked through to a website, versus 15% of those who saw standard results, according to Pew Research as reported by Search Engine Journal. If your content is the answer, you need to be cited, not just ranked. Liferay’s new SEO and AEO Studio is a bet on that shift.

    What Liferay actually shipped

Liferay announced the beta on November 2, 2026. According to the official press release, the tool gives marketing teams one place to monitor and improve performance across traditional search engines and AI answer engines. General availability is planned for Q1 2027.

It is not a standalone product in the way most AI visibility trackers are. It lives inside Liferay DXP, the digital experience platform. That matters for who benefits. If your site does not run on Liferay, this is a window into a competitor’s roadmap, not a purchase.

    The scanning covers three buckets:

    • Page metadata: missing or incorrect titles, descriptions, and canonical URLs.
    • Indexing and crawling: robots.txt blocks, sitemap errors, and AI crawler access.
    • AI search readiness: missing summaries or FAQ sections, plus hedging language that can hurt AI citation.

That third bucket is the interesting one. Hedging language as a citation risk is a content-level diagnosis, not a technical one. It speaks directly to editors, not engineers.

The workflow pitch: detect and fix in one loop

Here is the pain Liferay is targeting. Content strategists find an issue in one tool, file a ticket, and wait for a release cycle. Julia Molano, Director of Product Management at Liferay, described this handoff problem in the announcement, and anyone who has run a large site will recognize it.

The Studio’s answer is an AI assistant. Per DestinationCRM’s coverage, it can generate meta descriptions, suggest titles, build FAQ sections, and resolve straightforward technical issues such as broken redirect chains and sitemap errors. Fixes work at the page, content, and template level, individually or in bulk.

The governance detail is the real story: every change runs through Liferay DXP’s versioning and workflows, and a person reviews and approves before anything goes live.

Good. Bulk AI edits to a live brand site without approval gates would be a compliance headache, especially for regulated categories or anything touching creator disclosures and claims.

Where it fits against standalone AI visibility tools

Does a CMS-native studio replace a dedicated GEO tracker? Based on the published description, not obviously. The announcement says the Studio monitors AI citation and AI crawler activity, and pulls data from Google Search Console, Page Speed Insights, and Liferay Data Platform. What I could not find in the sources I reviewed is detail on which answer engines are sampled, how often, or how citation is measured.

That gap decides whether this is a monitor or a full tracker. Before you rely on it, compare it with what dedicated vendors offer. Our breakdown of GEO tracking fit shows how to separate audit-style tooling from genuine prompt-level visibility measurement. For a broader look at vendor claims, see our piece on vetting AI search vendors.

Why brand content teams should care even without Liferay

The checklist embedded in this product is a decent free audit framework. Strip away the software and you get questions any team can ask this week.

    1. Are AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt, or did a blanket rule block them years ago?
    2. Does each key page open with a clear, quotable summary?
    3. Do high-intent pages carry real FAQ sections that mirror buyer questions?
    4. Is the copy full of qualifiers (“may,” “can help,” “in some cases”) that give a model nothing to cite?
    5. Are canonicals and sitemaps clean enough that the right version of the page is the one being read?

Most teams fail item one or four without knowing it. Hedging is especially common in brand copy written to survive legal review. The fix is a negotiation between editorial and legal, not a plugin.

Questions to ask before you pilot it

Beta means unfinished. Treat it that way. If you are a Liferay customer, push on these points:

    • Measurement transparency: which AI engines, which prompts, what refresh cadence, and how citation is defined.
    • Approval load: bulk fixes are only a win if reviewers can approve them at the same speed. Otherwise you have moved the bottleneck from developers to editors.
    • Tone control: does the AI assistant follow your brand voice and claim substantiation rules when it writes FAQs and descriptions?
    • Pricing and packaging: I did not find this in the announcements I reviewed, so get it in writing.
    • Exit terms: what happens to AI-generated content and configuration if you leave the platform?

The last two echo the guardrail questions in our guide to agentic marketing cloud features. The same logic applies when an AI agent edits production content on your behalf.

There is also a strategic question. Suite-embedded tooling reduces handoffs, but it can limit your choice of specialists. Our analysis of suite versus specialist fit lays out how to weigh that trade.

What to measure in a pilot

Pick 20 to 30 pages tied to revenue, not the whole domain. Record a baseline: current issues flagged, time from detection to live fix, and whether your brand appears in AI answers for ten buyer questions you test manually. Then run the Studio’s fixes through your normal approval flow and recheck.

Two numbers tell you if it works. First, cycle time: days saved per fix. Second, citation movement, which you should verify independently rather than rely only on the tool’s own dashboard. A vendor grading its own homework is a classic measurement trap, one we cover in vetting error detection claims.

Keep expectations grounded. Keep expectations grounded. The same Search Engine Journal report says only 1% of users clicked a link inside an AI summary and visited a website. Being cited may build consideration without generating a visit. Your reporting should account for that.

Treat the Studio as a workflow accelerator for content hygiene, not proof that AI engines will cite you more. Cycle time is provable today. Citation lift has to be earned and independently verified.

    FAQs

What is Liferay SEO and AEO Studio?

It is a tool inside Liferay DXP that scans a site for traditional SEO and AI answer engine issues, then uses an AI assistant to propose and apply fixes. Liferay announced the beta on November 2, 2026, with general availability planned for Q1 2027.

Can I use it if my site is not on Liferay DXP?

Based on the announcement, it is built into Liferay DXP and relies on its versioning and workflows. Teams on other CMS platforms would need a different tool, though the audit categories are useful as a manual checklist.

Does the AI publish changes automatically?

No. Per the announcement, every change runs through Liferay DXP’s existing versioning and workflows, with a person reviewing and approving changes before they go live.

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO focuses on ranking in traditional search results. AEO focuses on being cited or surfaced in answers from AI assistants and answer engines. The overlap is large (clean metadata, crawlability), but AEO adds concerns such as AI crawler access, quotable summaries, and FAQ structure.

Why does AEO matter for brand teams?

Users who see AI summaries click through less. Users who see AI summaries click through less. Search Engine Journal’s coverage of the Pew study reports that 8% of users who saw an AI summary clicked a link to visit a website, compared with 15% of users who saw only standard results. Visibility inside the answer increasingly matters as much as the ranking.

What should I ask Liferay before buying?

Ask which answer engines are monitored, how citation is measured, how the AI assistant follows brand voice, what pricing looks like after beta, and what exit terms apply to AI-generated content.

Next step: run the five-point audit above on your 20 highest-revenue pages this week, whether or not you use Liferay. Then you will know exactly what a tool like this must fix, and what it can’t.
