Threads vs Bluesky Early Mover Bet: A Brand Budget Split Guide

Threads has reached a scale few new networks ever see, while Bluesky’s app has lost a large share of its peak audience. Both facts matter. Early mover opportunities for brands on Threads and Bluesky are real, but they are not the same bet. One is a scale play with ad infrastructure behind it. The other is a niche, protocol-driven experiment. Here is how to size each one.

Two platforms, two very different bets

Lumping these two together is the first mistake. They share a text-first format and a “conversation over broadcast” culture, and that is about where the similarity ends.

Bluesky’s story is different. Per Similarweb data reported by TechCrunch and summarized on Slashdot, Bluesky’s mobile app had 10.4 million monthly active users in June 2026, down 27.2% year-over-year.

So which is the “early” opportunity? Both, but for different reasons. Threads is early on brand-native tooling and community formats. Bluesky is early on trust signals and a highly engaged audience that most competitors have written off.

Why Threads deserves a real budget line

Threads is no longer a side project. The same Slashdot summary of the TechCrunch report says Threads daily active users in July 2026 were up 21.3% year-over-year to 147 million, and that Threads now appears to have roughly 66% more monthly active users than X. Those are Similarweb-based figures, so treat them as directional rather than audited.

The ad side matured quickly too. After initial testing with brands like Wendy’s, Threads ads became widely available to Meta advertisers. That means you can run paid Threads placements from the same Ads Manager your team already uses. No new vendor. No new contract. For an agency, that is a low-friction test.

The early mover edge on Threads is not reach. Reach is already there. The edge is owning a community topic before your category competitors show up.

Communities are the new brand surface

Meta is graduating communities out of beta, with a Communities Hub in the main menu, custom community icons, and expanded champion recognition. It is also expanding native-language tags to Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Meta also introduced a feed control called Your Algo, which builds on Dear Algo.

What does that mean for a brand? Feed control cuts both ways. Users who curate what they see will punish promotional noise faster. Communities reward the opposite: a steady, useful presence around a topic like running, parenting, or home cooking.

A Threads pilot that holds up in a budget review

Skip the “be everywhere” instinct. Run a tight 60 to 90 day test with three tracks.

    1. Owned conversation. Pick one community that matches a core product benefit. Post daily, reply to others, and document what earns replies versus likes.
    2. Creator seeding. Work with creators who already post natively on Threads. If your team plans co-authored posts, our Threads collab posts guide covers readiness checks.
    3. Paid amplification. Put a small share of Meta budget behind the best organic posts, and compare cost per engaged visit against your Instagram benchmarks.

Tag every post by theme from day one. The same discipline that works on Instagram applies here, and our content taxonomy guide shows how to structure it. Without tagging, you will have engagement numbers and no insight.

Bluesky: smaller, stickier, and slightly awkward

Here is the uncomfortable part. Similarweb’s data, as relayed in the report above, puts Bluesky’s quarterly average at about 22.1 million monthly active users in late 2024, falling to 10.7 million in the second quarter of 2026. That is roughly a 52% decline.

Why would any brand still show up? Because of engagement quality. The same report says Bluesky’s stickiness rate (daily to monthly active users) was around 29% in June, about the same as Threads. Fewer people, but those who stayed are actually using it.

There is also a strategic angle. The company is focused on its underlying AT Protocol powering a wider set of apps and communities, with projects like Eurosky and the video app Skylight growing on it. A brand handle and domain-based identity could, in theory, travel across that ecosystem. In theory. I would not budget against that yet.

Verification is the cheap, concrete win

Bluesky’s verification model is built on notability, not payment. Fast Company reported that Bluesky introduced Trusted Verifiers, letting approved organizations verify their employees, and that over 270,000 accounts used the domain-handle option over its first two years.

For brands, the practical move is simple. Set your official handle to your company domain, apply for a check if you qualify, and have executives and spokespeople use domain handles too. It costs almost nothing and blocks impersonation. If you are weighing how much more to invest, our capped pilot decision guide walks through the spend ceiling.

How should you split effort between them?

A reasonable starting split for most brands is to put the large majority of team hours into Threads and a small, capped share into Bluesky. Bluesky has no comparable native ad product in the sources I reviewed, so organic work and creator relationships carry the load there.

Use this filter before committing to Bluesky:

    • Does your audience skew toward tech, media, policy, science, or publishing? If yes, test it.
    • Do you have a spokesperson with an existing following there? Lead with a person, not a logo.
    • Can you tolerate a small, noisy, opinionated feed? Brand-voice missteps travel fast.

If you answer no to all three, put the handle in place, verify it, and move on.

Measurement and rights, the unglamorous part

Neither platform will hand you clean attribution on its own. Use dedicated UTM structures per platform and per community, and track branded search lift during the pilot. Link behavior changes frequently across Meta properties, so review our attribution prep guide before you lock in your tracking plan.

Also confirm disclosure and usage terms in every creator contract. A creator posting about your product on Threads still needs clear paid-partnership disclosure, and you should write reuse rights into the agreement before anything goes live.

    FAQs

Should brands prioritize Threads or Bluesky?

Threads, for most brands. It has far more monthly users, integrates with Meta’s ad tools, and now has formal communities. Bluesky works best as a small, capped test aimed at specific professional audiences.

Can brands run ads on Threads?

Yes. Threads ads are available to Meta advertisers after an initial test phase with brands like Wendy’s. You can manage them through your existing Meta advertising setup.

Is Bluesky’s shrinking audience a reason to skip it?

Not automatically. Its mobile monthly users have dropped sharply from the late-2024 peak, but its daily-to-monthly engagement ratio is comparable to Threads. Treat it as a low-cost, low-risk pilot, not a core channel.

How do brands get verified on Bluesky?

Use your company domain as your handle, and apply for the blue check if your account qualifies as notable and authentic. Organizations designated as Trusted Verifiers can also verify their own employees.

What should a brand measure in a Threads or Bluesky pilot?

Track replies and saves per post, engaged site visits through platform-specific UTMs, follower growth within your target community, and branded search lift. Set success thresholds before launch so the review is objective.

How long should a pilot run?

Sixty to ninety days is enough to see patterns in engagement and content themes without committing to a permanent channel strategy.

Next step: this week, claim and verify your Bluesky domain handle, pick one Threads community that matches your product, and write down the three metrics that will decide whether the pilot continues.
